The Mathletics website has numeracy activities for students to complete.

Wootube

Everyday maths hub

The Everyday Maths Hub from the NSW Department of Education supports parents to help engage positively with their children in relation to mathematics.

Study notes

It is important for students to revise by summarising what they have learned. This can be as simple as writing three summary sentences for each lesson to create study notes. A sample template for typing up study notes is attached. It is based on our Year 7 curriculum and can be modified for any grade.

Reading a novel

One of the best ways to improve literacy is to read a novel. Our school library has many novels and Liverpool City Council libraries at Carnes Hill, Green Valley and Liverpool also have a wealth of reading material. The school has compiled a list of classic books and literature which would be beneficial for families to purchase to form a home library.

The Project Gutenberg website is an online library of over 60,000 free eBooks. Students are able to access the complete text of famous titles including Alice in Wonderland, Frankenstein, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Jungle Book, Dracula and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

WordFlyers

The WordFlyers website has literacy activities for students to complete.

Brain Games

Brain games (both online and offline) including Lumosity, Elevate, Peak, Scrabble (Words with Friends), Sudoku and crosswords can all help improve brain function.

Reading the news

As students get older, it is important they have a strong understanding of the world around them and current events. Reading news websites is an excellent way for students to practise their reading skills, expand their vocabulary and develop a greater understanding of the world.

Spelling and vocabulary

Students should aim to use difficult and challenging words instead of simple and common words when writing. This resource contains a list of sample words that students can use to improve their vocabulary and test their spelling.

One of the best ways to improve student literacy is through expanding their vocabulary. Cecil Hills High School has created a list of 100 words that every high school student should know. This resource will help improve the spelling of students and their knowledge of the English language.

The Ozspeller website contains spelling lists with online quizzes. The Grade 6 and Advanced lists are appropriate for high school students. The website contains printable worksheets which can be used at home.

Writing

It is important for students to regularly practise writing, including the creation of narrative texts or stories. The Scholastic Story Starters website allows students to randomly generate story prompts which can be the basis of a piece of creative writing. Students may also wish to use dice games such as Rory's Story Cubes to help generate ideas for narrative writing.

Students should understand the criteria for assessing both narrative writing and persuasive writing. Further information and examples of work samples can be viewed for narrative writing and persuasive writing.

A website called 'The Most Dangerous Writing App' encourages students to write narrative texts online under time limits and helps students avoid 'writer's block'.

The Pobble website has a new story starter based on an image for each day of the year. This can be used by students to help with creative writing as the website provides a brief start to the story that students then complete.

NESA online multiple choice

This online website from NESA contains self-correcting multiple choice questions from past HSC exams.
